Pre Metro centre 1983

The photograph was taken from near The Crowley, now The Poachers Pocket, and shows the site of the Metro Centre, opened in 1986, before re-development. The Western by-Pass is in the foreground, with former industrial land used for dumping ash, partly under water, in the middle distance, while in the background a Carlisle-bound train has just passed Dunston Power Station, to the right. Scotswood and Benwell (Newcastle) can be seen in the distance, across the River Tyne.
